SO CALLED SYSTEM GLITCHES AND SCAMMING TECHNIQUES

The truth about it, is that these companies have software to cause your PC system errors, and a lot more caution should be exercised when you use your credit card even when the X company is only asking for verification purposes. It`s all one big scam that many companies are choosing to do so,be it AOL or Priceline.com or Expedia and the rest. They are ripping off the customers and are getting innovative about it everyday. That`s what means for some to be in the business nowaydays. The fine print does not even matter as they will manipulate to get at your money.Your last line of defense is your credit card company and hopefully they are your allies, but if not then dump them as well. What i suggest is to always collect evidence and then hire a lawyer, but in the case of AOL not cancelling accounts, and still charging or violating it`s own software policy it is better to file a complaint with your State`s Attorney and from there take it all the way up.Anyone ever heard of someone complaining about MSN?Not even one or so massive as the crowd of people is against AOL.And where is AOL today? It is down to advertising and nothing more. It`s chatrooms have long been deserted and people don`t trust their misleading ads of try it for 45 days free.Same goes for online travel agencies which control the payment processing (don`t ask me how) and they rip you off.I have a link where you can read about Priceline.com and scamming techniques. It`s called QuietLife and hopefully you read on there, before it`s too late for your hard earned money.I also can provide abudant facts that these online travel agencies are nothing more than scamming internet companies, who in fact provide their own vacation packages to you designed at driving their profit margins way up.My suggestion to you is to do your own research about the country you are wanting to visit, check with the Department of State Travel Warning and then decide.

ISTANBUL IS ONE MAJOR TRAVEL HOTSPOT

No doubt, this big city has everything to offer to anyone who would like to visit it.It`s population is huge and comprised of many cultures. It is the ultimate meeting- point of western and eastern cultures. It has magnificient historic sites and the food is marvellous.Booking hotels is easier and you could pay as low as $20 per night for a decent one or $800 for a super five star one.The locals are very good people, but if you head to big bazaars you will have a tough time to dissuade the salesmans. They are pretty convincing and persistent dealmakers.Aside from that,if you ever visit this city you will always want to visit it back.Airfares are pretty high during summer season as millions of tourists invade this city,so my suggestion to you would be to book during march. Also purchase a small dictionary,it should cost around $2 and the city`s map which isn`t much. You could a rent a car,but it`s much cheaper getting a bus ticket or ferry which you wouldn`t want to miss while passing through the Bosphour strait. There are two sides of the city which are divided by the strait. Both are very nice, but the asian one is not as attractive as the european one, although it has it`s own charms.Other superb additions to your vacation would be visiting the nearby islands. It all depends with your budget, but it is not excessively expensive as it`s sister attractions in Greece.

SKYPE IS CHEAPER AND FAR MORE RELIABLE THAN VONAGE AND THE REST

Voice over Internet Protocol is a way of making free phone calls over the internet that has been around for some time, but new developments in the technology used to connect callers look set to change the way we communicate. VoIP allows you to make calls over a data network such as the internet. VoIP converts the signal from your telephone into one that is capable of travelling over the internet, then converts it back at the other end so you can speak for free to anyone with a VoIP phone number.
When the online entrepreneurs behind the music file-sharing service Kazaa launched Skype - the best known VoIP service - in 2003, it threatened to do away with traditional landlines. Anyone with broadband internet and a microphone could download their free software and speak to other Skype users for free, and to landline numbers for almost nothing. The service quickly caught on and today has more than 171 million registered users.
But for many, the service proved frustrating. Picture the scene: you fancy a chat with your sister in Sydney. First you switch on your computer, then you open the Skype console and check if she's online. You click on her and hit dial. But she's gone to make a cup of tea. You try again a few minutes later. This time she picks up and you grapple with your unwieldy headset. But there's a delay and conversation runs aground so you think, "forget it", pick up your house phone and get her straight away. It's costing loads, but finally you're talking.
Those were the bad old days when, as early adopter Michael Love, 53, puts it, some calls abroad were great quality, but others were "like shouting in a bucket". So what's changed? A new generation of phones has hit the market and the big guns of the telecoms industry have embraced and invested in technology they feared would put them out of business.
"We don't see VoIP as a threat but as a huge opportunity and a major differentiation of our service," says Adam Liversage of BT. "BT has over one million VoIP customers in the UK using our Home Hub and PC phones. With the move to providing TV, mobile phone, internet and landline services in bundles, we believe all services will go over broadband."
And it's not about only calling acquaintances with VoIP handsets - many service providers now offer cheap calls using VoIP technology to normal landlines and mobile phones. But not everyone is convinced VoIP is poised to take over from traditional mobile phone lines. Ben Wood, a director at the UK based telecoms research firm CCS Insight is underwhelmed. "I don't think there is a mass UK market for VoIP yet," he says. "It's appealing and sexy, but in reality mobile users in the UK have huge bundles of free minutes. They could make the switch but then they have to register, find a hotspot, work out how to connect and somehow transfer their address book. Is it really worth it?"
However, he thinks VoIP will appeal to professionals. "For business users it's immensely attractive. I'm talking to you from Dubai and if I was making the call it would be costing me a fortune. But my hotel has WiFi hotspots. If I could use those as I travel, I could save thousands." But whether you use VoIP for business or pleasure, if your colleagues, family and friends have VoIP, talk isn't just cheap, it's free. Which is definitely worth chatting about.

GOOGLE NOT INDEXING MY PAGES

Unfortunately,Google not only disapproved my blog, but also is not indexing my pages.I was told by them that my blog violates their code, when i could have been told that the only solution to this would be to not deploy ads of other companies.Honestly,Google may have great targeting text ads,but i haven`t seen any google banner to be an eye-catcher.So i said OK to myself and moved on,but on top of this now Google does not index my pages at all while it does index my wordpress blog. Why??Is it because my blog here runs other agencies advertisement and there it is ad-free?I think this is the best answer in my case where there is little room for error on my part.I also got their sitemap and google base and what not,but to no avail. So when will the Google`s spider index my pages? They did force me to switch my blog to their new beta without any option. For a straight week i tried to keep my old blog without making new changes, but they wouldn`t let me sign in with the old one.Really, what is one left to do with a huge search engine company like Google which rakes in large sums of money for every search you do with them?I would say that Google can make at minimum $300 per user on a year-basis just by having it`s engine search used.Yeah, for every googling we do they get get rich while our little blogs are not even indexed.

MORTGAGES RATES HIT 3 MONTHS HIGH

Mortgage rates rose this week to their highest levels since the week before Halloween.

The benchmark 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose 10 basis points, to 6.42 percent, according to the Bankrate.com national survey of large lenders. A basis point is one-hundredth of 1 percentage point. The mortgages in this week's survey had an average total of 0.34 discount and origination points. One year ago, the mortgage index was 6.28 percent; four weeks ago, it was 6.24 percent.
The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage rose 12 basis points, to 6.19 percent. The 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgage rose 9 basis points, to 6.3 percent.
Mortgage rates tend to rise when the economic outlook is good, and the week bore some pretty good news. The highlight was the report of the gross domestic product for the final three months of 2006. The report estimated that total economic output rose at an annual rate of 3.5 percent in the final quarter. That was better than expected, and much stronger than GDP growth in the third quarter (an annual rate of 2 percent).

ITALY GOES AHEAD INTO PROSECUTING U.S SOLDIER

Italy Indicts American Soldier for Shooting of Italian in Iraq
By Sabina Castelfranco Rome07 February 2007
An Italian judge has indicted an American soldier for the shooting of an Italian intelligence agent in Baghdad in 2005. The soldier will be tried for voluntary murder. He is expected to be tried in absentia. Sabina Castelfranco reports for VOA from Rome.
Mario Lozano of the U.S. Army's 69th Infantry Regiment is being charged with the fatal shooting of an Italian intelligence agent at a checkpoint in Baghdad in March 2005. A judge in Rome Wednesday ordered that Lozano be tried for voluntary murder.
The agent who was killed, Nicola Calipari, had just secured the release of kidnapped journalist Giuliana Sgrena. The agent and the journalist were being driven to Baghdad airport when the U.S. soldier opened fire and fatally wounded the agent. The journalist was wounded.
Reacting to the news of the ruling, Sgrena said this was the outcome she had hoped for.
She said this was the outcome she wanted but until a decision was taken it was uncertain. She expressed satisfaction because the judge agreed the Mario Lozano should be tried for voluntary murder.
Lozano is expected to be tried in absentia, when the trial opens on April 17. He is believed to be from New York but his whereabouts are unknown. Sgrena said his failure to appear will not stop the trial.
Sgrena said the fact that the trial will go ahead is positive because it takes away the impunity of American soldiers. She said she is not looking for a scapegoat, adding that Lozano's defense lawyer made clear the U.S. soldier had followed orders. She added that a request has been made for the Pentagon to answer for the incident.
Rosa, widow of Italian intelligence agent Nicola Calipari, left, leaves a Rome court, 7 Feb 2007The widow of the intelligence officer was also in the court for the judge's ruling. She said that the decision appeared to be a first step on a long road toward truth and justice.
Lozano's Italian defense lawyer said the judge's decision surprised him because the soldier had been carrying out his duty. Prosecutors so far have not sought the soldier's arrest. If convicted, Lozano could be sentenced to life in prison.
The case has strained U.S.-Italian relations. The United States and Italy drew different conclusions in reports on the incident. U.S. authorities said the vehicle was traveling fast, alarming soldiers, who feared an insurgent attack.
Italian officials said the car was traveling at normal speed and accused the U.S. military of failing to signal there was a checkpoint.
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Wednesday the U.S. government considers the matter closed, following a U.S. investigation with Italian government participation in 2005. Whitman said it is a "fair assumption" that the U.S. military will not make the soldier available for trial in Italy. Whitman said the U.S. investigation was "very thorough," that all information was made available to the Italian government and that the U.S. Defense Department and the Italian Ministry of Defense consider this a "closed matter."

Study: Ads Exaggerate Benefits of Prescription Drugs

Drug companies overstate the benefits of prescription drugs in their television advertising, and TV ads for these medications have limited educational value, according to a study published in the latest issue of annals of medicine. As explained in the article's stated purpose: "American television viewers see as many as 16 hours of prescription drug advertisements each year, yet no research has examined how television ads attempt to influence consumers. This information is important, because ads may not meet their educational potential, possibly prompting consumers to request prescriptions that are clinically inappropriate or more expensive than equally effective alternatives."

ARMY CONFIRMED THAT IT HAD SECURITY CONTRACT IN IRAQ

After numerous denials, the Pentagon has confirmed that a North Carolina company provided armed security guards in Iraq under a subcontract that was buried so deeply the government couldn't find it.
The secretary of the Army on Tuesday wrote two Democratic lawmakers that the Blackwater USA contract was part of a huge military support operation by run by Halliburton subsidiary KBR.
Vice President Dick Cheney ran Halliburton before he became vice president.
Several times last year, Pentagon officials told inquiring lawmakers they could find no evidence of the Blackwater contract. Blackwater, of Moyock, N.C., did not respond to several requests for comment.
The discovery shows the dense world of Iraq contracting, where the main contractor hires subcontractors who then hire additional subcontractors. Each company tacks on a charge for overhead, a cost that works its way up to U.S. taxpayers.
'This ongoing episode demonstrates the Pentagon's complete failure to safeguard taxpayer dollars,' said Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., one of the lawmakers who had asked about the Blackwater contract and received denials.
'They continue to look the other way in the face of overwhelming evidence that Halliburton was charging taxpayers for unauthorized security services,' Van Hollen said.
The hidden contract not only cost taxpayers money, but it might have been illegal. The Halliburton subsidiary's main contract for military support services prohibited hiring subcontractors to provide armed security. That job is left to the U.S. military, unless the theater commander decides otherwise.
Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, scheduled a hearing Wednesday on the Blackwater contract.
Waxman, D-Calif., has cited examples in news reports that Blackwater paid employees $600 a day, and those charges increased to $1,500 a day by the time several layers of subcontractors tacked on their charges to the main contractor.
Waxman is at the forefront of Democrats who want to investigate fraud, waste and abuse in the Bush administration, and on Tuesday he promised two years of such scrutiny.
On Tuesday, Army Secretary Francis Harvey wrote Van Hollen and Waxman that on Jan. 30 the Army learned that ESS Support Services Worldwide, a dining facilities subcontractor under the KBR contract, hired Blackwater.
ESS didn't hire Blackwater directly, but did so through a hotel company, further obscuring the contract.
Harvey further said the security costs were not itemized anywhere, yet were factored into ESS' labor costs under KBR's contract, which in turn is financed by U.S. taxpayers.
'The U.S. Army is continuing to investigate this matter and we are committed to providing full disclosure of the results of our investigations to the committee,' he wrote.
In July Harvey sent a letter to Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., then chairman of the committee's national security subcommittee, that cited KBR as saying it never had directly hired a private security contractor under its overall support contract.
Harvey added that KBR 'has queried ESS and they are unaware of any services under the ... contract that were provided by Blackwater USA.'
In September, an Army procurement official, Tina Ballard, appeared before the committee and said she verified that Harvey's prior letter - asserting that no contract could be found - was correct.
Van Hollen held up a copy of Blackwater's contract at the hearing, and Ballard still contended Blackwater provided no services to the Halliburton subsidiary.
At the end of November, the lawmakers received further evidence that the Pentagon was wrong. The parent firm of ESS, responding to questions posed by Republican committee staff, confirmed that it used Blackwater for security under the contract with Halliburton's subsidiary.
Van Hollen and Waxman pressed the Pentagon again, leading to the Army secretary's admission Tuesday that the contract existed.
Blackwater employees have suffered heavy casualties in Iraq. In 2004 an Iraqi mob killed four employees, dragged their bodies through the streets of Fallujah and hung two from a bridge.
In September 2005, the company said three of its employees were killed in Mosul.
And last month, Blackwater confirmed that five of its employees were killed in a helicopter that went down in Baghdad under heavy fire.

HUNGARY MAY TURN ITS OLD JAILS INTO LUXURY HOTELS

BUDAPEST, Hungary, Feb. 6 Hungary is considering a foreign company's offer to turn four state prisons, built some 200 years ago, into plush hotels, reports said Tuesday.
The offer by an unidentified Spanish firm comes at the time when the Hungarian Justice Ministry is planning to build new penitentiaries, refurbish old ones, and demolish prisons located in downtown areas of cities, the Budapest daily Nepszabadsag reported.
The four prisons constructed in the 19th century are situated in central, residential areas in the northeastern town of Satoraljaujhely, the southwestern town of Szekszard, the northern town of Vac, and in Szeged in southern Hungary.
The buildings in the four towns are considered low security prisons and inadequate for inmates' activities, the Hungarian news agency MTI said.
Two new prisons currently under construction in Tiszalok in northeastern Hungary and in Szombathely in the west will accommodate 1,500 inmates, adding to the existing jail capacity of 10,000 convicts in Hungary's 32 prisons.

ALBANIA BACKS AHTISARI`S PROPOSAL

Albania on Friday welcomed the UN plan on the final status of Kosovo, believing it will bring an end to the province's status quo of getting nowhere.
"This is no doubt a historical moment for Kosovo, as well as for the whole region," Albanian Foreign Minister Besnik Mustafaj told a press conference, highly praising UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari for his hard work.
The plan, presented in Belgrade and Pristina by Ahtisaari on Friday, stops short of calling for full independence for Kosovo, but allows the breakaway province to have its own flag and anthem.
Serbia has rejected the plan out of hand, saying it would pave the way for Kosovo's eventual independence. Under the plan, Kosovo has the right to make international agreements reserved for sovereign states.
Kosovo's President Fatmir Sejdiu welcomed the plan, saying they were convinced that the plan would lead Kosovo to become an independent state.
Kosovo has been run by the UN and the NATO since 1999 when a NATO military campaign forced Serbian forces to withdraw.
Ethnic Albanians, who make up 90 percent of Kosovo's population, are demanding independence, while Serbia and Serbs in Kosovo want it to remain inside Serbia.
For years, Albania has been the strongest supporter of Kosovo's independence, although it said it had no territorial ambition over the province

It`s not just the Middle East rich in oil reserves as time has proven. They do however, have one of the best graded oil which needs little to no refinery work. Many oil fields and under the sea/oceanic shelf have been found thanks to the advanced technology, but that is not without problems as oil fields of certain countries have led to wars or diplomatic rows. The most recent one is over Cyprus,an island divided since 1974 and likely to remain so until there is a true reconciliation.According to the news report,it is estimated that this one holds significant oil deposits which are valued around $400 billion. Moreover,Lebanon and Egypt have started to negotiate with Greek Cypriots for an agreement.Cyprus though while being another satellite Greek state, does not have territorial rights and water rights that extend to Lebanon or Egypt. The same goes to Turkish Cypriot republic over Greek waters as it is the same case over Sakhalin island. While Cyprus may seem a resolved issue which is,the problems could arise if Lebanon and Egypt do not respect the obvious demarcated lines and hop into a quick agreement with Nicosia. And to add more fuel to the hot issue,Athens reitarated that it would be a negative step for Ankara`s EU joining process. It is clear that Athens has some powerful backing in the EU political corridors, but from it`s short-sightedness it will risk paying more for it`s actions.

Uzbekistan Secret Police Detains Protestant Pastor

TASHKENT/BUDAPEST — Uzbekistan’s secret police detained Protestant Pastor Dmitry Shestakov at his church in the city of Andijan last weekend, after a regional prosecutor had accused him of "committing high treason,".
It is said the 37-year-old pastor is apparently accused of "incitement of national, racial and religious enmity," under the Soviet republic’s penal code.
If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. Authorities began to "harass him" in May 2006, apparently in reaction to the conversion to Christianity of some ethnic Uzbeks, it is said.“Uzbeks started coming to faith in his church, and this was not good news to the authorities,” one Tashkent who knows him was quoted as saying.
Shestakov, his wife and three daughters apparently went into hiding in June 2006 after regional prosecutor Kamolitdin Zulfiev accused the pastor of committing treason. Police reportedly also raided the pastor’s house, temporarily detaining Shestakov and confiscating videos of his sermons.
NATIONAL STATE SECURITY
Although the pastor was ordered to list all of his church members, he refused to do so. "It was clear that the National State Security were going to find something to charge me with and remove me from my position as a Christian pastor," Shestakov said in an interview.
Authorities also searched Shestakov’s Andijan church, confiscating religious CDs and videos and pressuring members of the congregation to testify against their pastor,it is said.
Human rights groups say Uzbekistan’s legal infrastructure violate internationally recognized norms of religious freedom. Local prosecutors frequently file "falsified charges" in order to obtain arrest orders against religious leaders perceived to be a threat against "national security," local Christians and outside observers say.

INSURANCE COMPANIES OVER CHARGING THEIR CUSTOMERS

Ok,ya got 0 points on your record and you think that your insurance monthly bill is going to be pretty low.WRONG! But how, with 0 points and an "EXPENSIVE" car to insure? It turns out that 85% of insurance companies and their affiliates, don`t base that on what you or anyone else out of the industry would think. They also go by a credit score which really is insurance risk score, but also almost all of them would try to overcharge you.How is it done?Well, they would go for the most expensive policy for you or some kind in between, but never actually telling you as a client what really would make sense for you. They would add in more unneeded coverage just so they can get you to pay higher premiums, and that my friend transpires into more earnings for them. Not to mention mandatory memberships like AAA does or etc.Looking to make switches?Bad move again because you will actually won`t find any good deal without some good reasearch or tips from your friends.Best thing ya can do is to not get any tickets and not make any claims, as that will definitevely make you either uninsurable with 6 points and up or having to pay higher premiums. It is a sad state of affairs, but unfortunately this the law and insurance companies have taken advantage of it.

WHY IRAN WASN`T HIT FIRST????

Analysis: Bush's Iran Stance Echoes Iraq
By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer
document.write(getElapsed("20070205T032708Z"));
3 hours agoUPDATED 2 HOURS 49 MINUTES AGO
WASHINGTON - President Bush's tough new stance on Iran and his military buildup in the Persian Gulf recall some of the drumbeats that preceded the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
As then, the Bush administration is making allegations about Iran without providing proof.
It is suggesting Iran is sending weapons to Iraq, yet offering no evidence the supplies can be traced to Tehran. There are whispers, too, that Iranian intelligence agents were behind the recent abduction and execution of five U.S. soldiers.
Iran is the "axis of evil" country whose nuclear ambitions must be stopped. Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is now Bush's primary Mideast nemesis, replacing the late Saddam Hussein.
Bush's efforts to rally public support behind his harder line on Iran have many lawmakers and some from the intelligence and defense world wondering if it is a prelude to military activity.
"We are not responsibly in the region if we don't deal with them," said Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va. "And the situation that we have right now where we continue to talk only about the military side _ again, it's half a strategy," he told "Fox News Sunday."
Bush insists he has no plans to invade Iran, only to protect U.S. troops in Iraq.
But in recent days:
_Bush raised the U.S. naval presence in the Persian Gulf to its highest level since 2003 by ordering a second aircraft carrier strike group to the region.
_The administration confirmed that Bush has authorized the military to kill or capture Iranian agents who are plotting attacks on U.S. forces.
_The administration has armed Iran's Arab neighbors with Patriot missiles. The Pentagon halted sales of spare parts from the its recently retired F-14 fighter jet fleet because of concerns they could be transferred to Iran.
Administration critics suggest the White House is exaggerating Tehran's ties to attacks inside Iraq to justify a possible future military assault _ just as it manipulated prewar intelligence to build its case for its 2003 invasion of Iraq, they claim.
"He again is convinced that he's on the side of right, fighting against the forces of evil, expressing this somewhat oversimplified view of the world he has," said Michael O'Hanlon, a foreign policy analyst for the Brookings Institution and an adviser to the bipartisan Iraq Study Group. "He's doing what he thinks is right to show resoluteness."
Bush's saber-rattling _ rather than reaching out to Iran and Syria diplomatically as recommended by the Iraq Study group and many in Congress _ is a risky strategy. Many national security professionals suggest this approach could lead to wider conflict.
If conditions continue to deteriorate in Iraq, "the final destination on this downhill track is likely to be a head-on conflict with Iran and with much of the world of Islam at large," Zbigniew Brezinski, President Carter's national security adviser, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Bush is betting he can help prop up the shaky government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and stop a supply line of weapons and fighters into Iraq.
It's a big bet.
Iran has denied accusations it is supplying weapons to Shiite militias in Iraq. But an official assessment of Iraq by U.S. intelligence agencies said Iran was providing lethal support to select Shiite groups.
Still, the National Intelligence Estimate released Friday said "outside actors" such as Iran and Syria are "not likely to be a major driver of violence or the prospects for stability" in Iraq.
Stephen Hadley, Bush's national security adviser, said the declassified public document "does not adequately reflect" the degree of concern in nearby Sunni nations about Shiite-run Iran's meddling in Iraq. He disputed suggestions that Bush has overemphasized Iran's role.
In his Iraq speech to the nation last month, Bush said the U.S. would "seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced training and weaponry to our enemies in Iraq," citing Iran and Syria.
Critics of Bush's harder line on Iran fall into two camps: those who worry his recent strong talk might lead to a military conflict and those who claim he should have gotten tough earlier.
Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards, for instance, has criticized what he suggests is previous indifference to the Iranian threat.
"In order to ensure Iran never gets nuclear weapons, all options must remain on the table," Edwards says in a hint at possible military action. The vice presidential nominee in 2004 has called for withdrawing troops from Iraq.
For now, time appears to favor Iran, says Anthony Cordesman, an analyst with the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Even if the United States and Iraq's Shiite-led government can bring stability, "Iran must now feel it can outwait the U.S., exploit U.S. unpopularity in many Shiite areas, and has every reason to be opportunistic.
"Iran wins to some degree even if it does not exploit the situation. A Shiite-dominated Iraq is going to need Iranian help and support for years to come."

Russian Commies under the guise of Democracy

Khodorkovsky to face new charges

Khodorkovsky says his case is politically-motivatedRussian prosecutors are to file new money-laundering charges against jailed oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, his lawyers say.
They say the prosecutors have told them to travel to the Siberian city of Chita to be present for the indictment.
Khodorkovsky, the ex-chairman of Yukos, is serving an eight-year term for fraud and tax evasion in the Chita region.
The new charges raise the prospect of more years in jail for Khodorkovsky - who was once Russia's richest man.
On Sunday, four of Khodorkovsky lawyers said they had been briefly held by the authorities at a Moscow airport as they prepared to fly to Chita.
Yuri Schmidt, one of those detained, said no explanation was given for the detention and they were released an hour later.
Parole unlikely
Khodorkovsky built up a multi-billion-dollar fortune before falling foul of the authorities. He was arrested in 2003 along with his business associate Platon Lebedev.

He had been serving his sentence in Kharp, in the far north of Russia, but last year was transferred to Chita.
Critics have accused Khodorkovsky of exploiting Russia's natural wealth for personal gain.
His supporters say the case against him was politically motivated and he is paying the price for his political ambitions.
Khodorkovsky and Lebedev were facing the possibility of release in 2008-2009 - but that appears unlikely now that new charges are being laid against them.

GENOCIDE IN CHECHNYA

INDEPTH: CHECHNYAChechnyaCBC News Online July 10, 2006
Moscow's hold on Chechnya has been tenuous at best, since the czar's forces first conquered the Caucasus region in the 19th century. Even under Russian rule, the region has always managed to maintain some degree of autonomy. The oil-rich region was made part of the Soviet Mountain People's Republic in 1921, was declared the Chechen Autonomous Region the following year and, along with the Ingush region to the west, was named the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1936.But when Chechen forces were accused of collaborating with the Germans during the Second World War, Joseph Stalin dissolved the republic and ordered many of its people deported to Central Asia, to what is now Kazakhstan. Many of the exiles died, but those who survived returned to the region in the 1950s, after Stalin's death, and the republic was reborn in 1957.When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the Chechen parliament – under President Dzhokhar Dudayev – proclaimed the region the independent Republic of Ichkeria, or Chechnya. The Ingush minority in Chechnya was granted their own republic, Ingushetia, in the western part of the region in 1992.The moves were not recognized by Moscow. SeparatismA growing separatist movement in Chechnya prompted the Kremlin in 1994 to help the pro-Moscow opposition fight the Dudayev regime. In December of that year, Russian President Boris Yeltsin sent 40,000 troops to remove Dudayev and prevent the region from breaking away. But what was planned as a quick campaign escalated into a bloody 13-month war. The capital of Grozny was crushed. Estimates of the number of people killed ranged from 30,000 to 100,000.The Russian military outnumbered the rebels, but the Chechens staged a number of devastating attacks on the soldiers.By 1996, the Russians held many of the urban areas in Chechnya, but the separatists controlled the mountainous areas in the south. In April of 1996, Dudayev was killed in a Russian rocket attack. In August that year, the two sides reached a ceasefire agreement that left Chechnya essentially autonomous. The last of the Russian soldiers withdrew in early 1997. The ceasefire provided for presidential and parliamentary elections in Chechnya, which were held in January 1997. Separatist army leader Alsan Maskhadov easily won the election. The Maskhadov era was marked by chaos and lawlessness: a series of kidnappings – a Russian general, a four-year-old girl and an American missionary – and an assassination attempt on Maskhadov himself. Oil pipelines passing through Chechnya were illegally tapped. In 1999, Islamic law was established in the republic. In August 1999, Chechen guerrillas invaded the neighbouring Russian republic of Dagestan. Moscow responded with air strikes on the militants' positions in border villages in the Caucasus Mountains. Weeks later, a series of bombings swept Moscow, the first in a shopping mall and then two more that destroyed two apartment blocks and killed nearly 300 people. The Kremlin blamed the attacks on Chechen terrorists and the Maskhadov government. Russian planes started bombing targets within Chechnya in late September 1999, and tanks and troops followed days later. Maskhadov declared martial law in Chechnya as well as a ghazevat, or holy war, in which all men of eligible age were ordered to fight. Russia faced international criticism as it moved on Grozny. Russian president Vladimir Putin denied that troops were attacking civilian targets, as accounts of factories and apartment buildings being reduced to rubble mounted. He later expressed regret over the number of Chechen civilians killed in the fighting.Tens of thousands of Chechens and more than 10,000 Russian conscripts have died in the conflicts and an estimated 400,000 Chechens have fled to neighbouring Ingushetia to live in refugee camps.Kadyrov years In May 2000, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared direct rule of Chechnya and appointed Akhmad Kadyrov, a former construction worker and Muslim cleric, to be the head of the Chechen government. The former separatist defected to the pro-Moscow side and some Chechens consider him a traitor. With the change in leadership, Chechen separatists launched a series of attacks on Russian targets. In September 2001, Chechen rebels attacked the town of Gudermes, the republic's second largest city and the site of the Russian administration. Rebels also shot down an Mi-8 helicopter over Grozny, killing at least 10 high-ranking Russian officers. In August 2002, Chechen rebels fired a missile at an Mi-26 helicopter, killing 118 Russian soldiers. But it was in October 2002 that Chechens took the fight to Moscow, seizing a theatre and holding about 800 people hostage. Three days later, Russian soldiers stormed the theatre. The raid killed 50 rebels and about 100 of the hostages. In December 2002 and May 2003, a pair of suicide bombings against the Russian-backed government killed nearly 150 people, and Kadyrov narrowly escaped a suicide attack that left 12 people dead. Kadyrov was declared the winner of the presidential election in October 2003, but the election was marred by allegations of interference from Moscow. In the days leading up to the vote, Putin made one of Kadyrov's political rivals an adviser. Another candidate was not allowed to run because the Chechen Supreme Court ruled that his nomination papers were invalid. Separatist parties had been declared illegal and were not allowed to run at all. In May 2004, Chechen separatists killed Kadyrov and at least six other people during a ceremony at a packed soccer stadium commemorating Russia's victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. A bomb made from two artillery shells had been planted under the stadium seats months before the event took place. A local medical centre said the explosion killed 24 people and injured 46 others, while Putin's office said only seven people died. Political analyst Pavel Felgenhauer said Kadyrov's death is a huge blow to Putin's efforts to stamp out the Chechen insurgency. "Everyone in the Kremlin understands that without a base in Chechen society you can't stop that separatist movement," said Felgenhauer. "Our base was Kadyrov. Now we're without a base," he said. An election to replace Kadyrov took place on August 29, 2004. Voters chose Moscow's favoured candidate, Interior Minster Alu Alkhanov, as the new Chechen president. Alkhanov is already a target, however. Rebel leader Aslan Maskhadov had vowed to kill whoever won the election. On Sept. 2, 2004, heavily armed militants took more than 1,200 hostages, including children, in a school gymnasium in Beslan, in southern Russia. The militants had rigged the building with bombs, which started exploding (accidentally, according to some witnesses). The militants starting shooting at fleeing hostages and Russian troops stormed in. At least 338 people were killed, more than half of them children. On Sept. 17, 2004, an e-mail message from Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev was posted on a rebel website. The letter said Basayev's Riyadus Salikhin Martyrs' Brigade was behind the school siege in Beslan and the suicide bomb attacks that downed two Russian passenger planes in late August 2004. In March 2005, Chechen rebel leader Aslan Maskhadov was killed during a "special operation," according to a Russian army spokesperson. On May 26, 2006, the only surviving hostage-taker in the Beslan Siege was handed a life-sentence. Nur-Pashi Kulayev, 25, was found guilty of terrorism and murder in the three-day siege. Families of the victims called for a death sentence. The judge agreed with the families, but because Russian government has a moratorium on capital punishment, he gave Kulayev life in prison. In July 2006, Basayev was killed in an explosion in Ingushetia as he was escorting a truck carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives. The blast occurred during a special police operation, according to reports. Putin called Basayev's death "deserved retribution."
